Gibson 1973 Custom Shop SJ250 CN Acoustic

This is a Gibson Custom Shop SJ250 CN acoustic guitar.  The guitar was designed by me in 1973.  It was done in a clear nitro finish.  The top, sides and back are all quarter-sawn, non-laminated, highly flamed maple.  Although the back and sides do not show it, they were extremely highly flamed and consistant from top to bottom.  The top was picked from over 500 tops.  The back, sides and neck maple were from the R&D division, which got all the best woods.  The neck and peghead veneer inlays were cut from African snailshell and pink and green abalone and took 120 man hours to cut by hand, as they didn't have CNC digital software or computers to do that back then.

The fretboard is a copy taken from a photo of an 1895 German Mauer guitar with a ruler lying next to it for scale from a collector in New Hampshire.  The peghead is a copy of an original 1925 Lloyd Loar F-5 mandolin.  The binding is multiple white/black/white with the checkerboard also.  The nut is carved from a block of solid pearl.  The side dot markers (not shown) were green abalone.  It is hard to see the color of this board from the photos unfortunately.  The pickguard was a custom made black one (usually red transparent ones were used on J-200's).  It is inlaid with pearl for the flower centers.  The solid ebony bridge was also inlaid and I had them put in a jazz, compensated adjustable bridge.  The top bracing was from an experimental design wherein the top was braced to a very slight crown, top to bottom and acted as a speaker to throw the sound out.

This guitar broke windows with it's volume, but had a wonderfully balanced tone.  The case (unfortunately not shown in the pictures) was covered in all hand-tooled tan leather in a western motif with calf fur interior matching the color of the outside of the case.  At the time, this guitar was designed and built, 1973, there was no other one like it.  It's funny that in 2000, Gibson introduced a J-200 Vine model.  The guitar resides in a museum in Japan at this time.
